RSV International is currently designing Shaft no. 2 on the Oyu Tolgoi Project in Mongolia. This will be one of two initial production shafts that will handle ore from the underground block cave operation.
Shaft no. 2 is 10m in diameter and its head frame towers 31 stories above the Gobi desert. The concentrator is designed to process 100 000 tonnes per day which will initially be mined from the open-pit operations. The tonnage will be increased to 160 000 tonnes per day from the underground operations. Full commercial production is set for 2013. Oyu Tolgoi will produce 1.2 billion lbs of copper and 650 000 oz of gold per annum for the first ten years. It is anticipated that it will take up to 100 years to mine this deposit.
