In May 2008, RSV (SA) was appointed by Lonmin Platinum to conduct a Feasibility Study for its Karee 3 Shaft UG2 Sub-decline. Following this, RSV (SA) was awarded the EPCM contract that included commissioning and hand-over. The project entailed the sinking of a conveyor/material decline with four levels and establishing the infrastructure of the decline bottom. Parallel to the conveyor/material decline would be a chairlift decline with both declines at -9 degrees to the horizontal and levels at 36 metres apart.
A 250kW single drum winder was installed above the main levels which served as the main access level to the decline. The winder was equipped with the Gondola system for material transport. All services were installed between the conveyor and the material sides in the decline and forms a barrier between the two systems. An ore pass system was linked from the decline to the main level from where the rock is transferred into the vertical shaft main ore pass system.
